1956 Topps Mickey Mantle Card
In 1956 Topps rid themselves of any baseball card competition by buying competitor Bowman. The previous two years Bowman had won the rights to many top players, preventing Topps from producing any Mickey Mantle cards. The 1956 Topps Mickey Mantle baseball card has a value of about $1,500. The 1956 is one of the more desirable and sought after baseball cards. The card is set horizontally with his stats placed on the back. It shows a smiling Mickey Mantel with Yankee fans cheering in the back ground. The picture is rich and bold in color and a must have for any collector. In 1956 Mickey Mantle was the MVP of the American League. That same year he won the AL Triple Crown. The fact that it was the triple crown has definitely helped to make this one of the most coveted Mantle cards on today’s market. At just 24 years of age, Mantle was already at the top of his game this season. He was hitting .353, racked up 52 homers, and 130 RBI’s, and was the league MVP! He also hit one of the 10 longest homeruns of his career this season. Hitting against the Washington Senators’ pitcher Pedro Ramos, Mickey knocked one 620 feet across Yankees Stadium! The spectacle was talked about for months and was one of the early high marks of the Mickey Mantle legend.
These factors all combine to make this one of the blue chip cards of this series. With such legendary talents as Ted Williams, Roberto Clemente, Sandy Koufax, Willie Mays, and Jackie Robinson sharing this series, the Mickey Mantle card is still viewed as the must-own card of this set.
