1963 Topps Mickey Mantle Card
Again, vintage Topps baseball cards feature Micky Mantle’s amazing career, and on the flip side of Mantel’s handsome mug, you can catch up on 1963’s amazing stats. Add this to your collection for a sure base hit. This card can sell for up to $1,250! Again Topps went with the vertical style for this years Mickey baseball card. That same year Mickey showed up on a different card along with other Home Run leaders. This cards value also holds steady with a book value in the neighborhood of $600.00 for Mint/Near-Mint condition. The ’63 Topps series was unique in that it featured a new premium collectible in the form of Topps Peel-Offs included on 46 cards.
These were stickers of players which could be peeled off and stuck on things. The Peel-Offs that remain “unpeeled” are hot collector’s items and quite rare considering, most kids at the time were eager to use the stickers. Mickey Mantle was also featured on a non-card collectible this year. There was a commemorative plaque which could be ordered by mailed and was shipped in a frame and ready to hang.
Overall though ‘63 was a down year for Mickey Mantle as he was sidelined much of the season and received zero MVP votes. This led to a lack of collectibles and special cards of Mantle for the 1963 year, and the ones that exist are all the more valuable because of this.
The 1963 Topps series featured 576 card and was a welcome change to many fans in that the colors were much brighter and sharper than the previous years cards. The rarest cards from the 1963 Topps series are #477-522 and these cards are very tough to find in top condition. Despite the brighter colors though, there was one drawback. The rookie cards in the series are considered quite ugly and are some of the least favorite ever made.
